• Can we trust the information on my Egg Donors’ profile?

We obviously rely on the Egg Donor to be honest. We do communicate with her and will verify selected information, but – believe us – there’s no real financial gain in donating, so no motive to lie on her profile. She’s going to jab herself with needles, risk mood swings and bloating and be involved in an anonymous medical procedure that takes time out of her normal lifestyle.

It’s in all our interests to make sure that you choose the right Egg Donor in every sense of the word. There are enough checks and balances in the system to pick up problem Egg Donors well in advance of them qualifying to join our database!

  • What is a Proven Egg Donor? Should I choose one?

If an Egg Donor has donated successfully before, or been pregnant before, she is “proven”. But all our Egg Donors have medical scans and examinations to confirm they have ovaries and eggs and to track how their eggs mature with hormone treatment. So there is only a slight doubt removed when you choose a Proven Egg Donor.

Concentrate on choosing the right Egg Donor for you.

  • How do the specialists decide what is a good quality egg?

Retrieved eggs are surrounded by cumulous cells, that mask the true nature of the egg until they are removed by the sperm, about 19 hours after insemination. Then, the embryos have to develop due to a specific timeline (four-cell stage on day 2 and an eight-cell stage on day 3). When this process has taken place, your specialist is able to comment with some confidence on whether the particular embryo is a “good” one.

Interestingly, embryos that develop faster, or slower than this timeline, are generally, but not always, of lesser quality.

  • So, you have a lot of background on your Egg Donors?

Apart from basic information such as age, weight and location, our Egg Donors also tell us about their personality and motivation for donating, their education, their medical and family medical history (up to two generations) and we disclose childhood and baby photos to you. There’s plenty of information for you to consider!

  • Will the procedure work?

60-70% of the time it does work, first time. As in, “you are finally pregnant!”

It’s a real prospect if you have been struggling with infertility. If not, as the Clinics usually recover more eggs than you actually need for your IVF, you could try a Frozen Egg Transfer (FET), or you could try the routine again. After three cycles using donated eggs, the success rates reach into the 90%s.

Obviously there are many factors involved in bringing your successful pregnancy to term. Your specialists are qualified to discuss this with you in detail and we encourage you to ask for as much information as you can.

  • How old are your Egg Donors?

The ideal age for egg donation is the age at which your Egg Donor’s eggs are most viable, and egg quality is directly affected by the age of your Egg Donor. Statistically, this means women in their mid-20s, although slightly older and slightly younger women are excellent candidates, too. ababySA accepts Egg Donors from 20 to 34 years old.

  • I don’t know much about South Africa. Where do I start? Can you help?

This is a great place. It’s modern and African, with world-class infrastructure and top-skilled medical professionals. It’s a diverse country of enormous possibility, in convenient time zones and with outstanding scenery. Start here

  • Will I have to wait for an Egg Donor?

Our Egg Donors may decide to donate again. In South Africa, the medics suggest a maximum of six donations, or five pregnancies, whichever comes first. Clinics may differ slightly in this, but will be able to justify their policy to you.

Once an Egg Donor is matched, or chosen, we remove her profile from our website. After at least one normal cycle and period, she may choose to donate again – so they have at least three months break between donations, and the decision to continue is theirs and theirs alone. As long as you are reasonably clear about what you are looking for, we should have a good few choices for you.

  • Are Frozen Egg Transfers (FET) often successful?

Frozen eggs, thawed later, may lose up to 50% of their fresh potential. You can imagine how difficult it is to perfectly preserve anything in this way! So, fresh is always better than frozen (although recent studies suggest that new techniques may improve this record significantly).

Anyway, the Fertility Clinics do have very strict criteria for choosing eggs that may be frozen – and they will only implant embryos that have been grown successfully in the laboratory for two days. Even then, the likelihood of a successful pregnancy is still lower than that of a fresh cycle.

  • What plays a more important role, nature or nurture?

We wish we could confidently answer this question. There’s a good summary of the debate here, but – in short – we wonder if your child’s innate (genetic) blueprint (nature), or her environmental experiences (nurture) will play a stronger role in defining the person she or he will ultimately grow to be. Our Egg Donor profiles are detailed precisely because we think that you should have enough information to choose natural features that match yours, but – as we’ve said – there’s no doubt that the family environment is critical to your child’s development. This is your baby. You are the mother.

  • Why should I choose ababySA.com?

We care about one thing only – professional services to the special groups with whom we work: Egg Donors, Recipients and Clinics. We have plenty of experience in managing the process of Egg Donation and – at the end of the day – it’s all about a successful pregnancy. It’s about you, not us.

We want, manage and support committed, high-quality Donors; we provide these special people to you, our Recipients with empathy and an understanding of your special circumstances and we support busy Fertility Clinics with properly-screened, responsible and committed people.

  • Is Egg Freezing a good idea?

It’s common practice to freeze some extra eggs recovered from an Egg Donor (assuming that they meet set medical standards), for your future use if necessary. Although use extensively, it’s still early days and successful pregnancy rates are still much lower than when you use donated eggs immediately as they are recovered.

ICSI is usually used to fertilize frozen eggs after thawing.

It’s a world heritage site, accessible via the cableway or many walking and hiking trails around the Peninsula.

     ROBBEN ISLAND

    Robben Island

Robben Island was the home of ex-President Nelson Mandela for 27 years. It is now a national monument and not to be missed. Hourly trips from the Nelson Mandela Museum at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront will take you to the island, which has become a beacon of hope in the new South Africa. The tour takes you through the old prison, including Madiba’s cell. It’s not only about political prisoners, but also conservation: Robben Island has one of the largest African Penguin populations (a threatened species.)

    DISTRICT SIX MUSEUM

    District Six Museum

This beach, along with Camps Bay and Llandudno, is renowned for the stunning surroundings and beautiful people. You’ll also find “the Republic of Hout Bay”: a little fisherman’s village that nestles below the fabulous cliff drive of Chapman’s Peak. Build by prisoners of war in the previous century, it is most definitely one of the world’s most scenic drives. While in Hout Bay, take a boat trip to Seal Island and visit one of the largest Cape Fur seal colonies in the world, visit the World of Birds or the various markets, or go horseriding and – even – wine tasting!.

    CAPE POINT

    Cape Point

Cape Point is the most southern point of the Cape Peninsula; a must where the two Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. The conservation area is breathtaking and will leave an impression that will stay with you forever. If there ever was a spectacular end of the world, this would be it…

     SIMON’S TOWN

    Simons Town

The Eastern side of the Peninsula offers many attractions. Not least is False Bay, where historic Simon’s Town is home to the South African Navy. This quaint little town has stunning views of False Bay, home to the Great White Shark. South Africa is the only country in the world where this shark is a protected species. Legend has it that there is a great white shark in the False Bay Area that is so big that the locals has dubbed him the “SUB”. Don’t miss a visit to the penguins on Boulders beach.

The I&J Predator Exhibit contains 2.2 million litres of seawater and is one of the most dramatic exhibits in the Aquarium. There are several great viewing points – including the semi-tunnel which hugs the perimeter of the exhibit, offering a spine-tingling encounter as sharks swim overhead. Ragged-tooth sharks; shoals of yellowtail, garrick and many other fish; several species of ray and a turtle are visible through an enormous 11 metre wide by 4 metre high acrylic panel.

    GOLD REEF CITY

Johannesburg is synonymous with South Africa’s gold-mining industry: the city was founded in 1886 as a miner’s village on the Witwatersrand goldfields. Today, the Gold Reef City theme park and museum – built around the original No.14 shaft of Crown Mines – recreates the city of Johannesburg as it was during the early days of the gold rush. The guided tour includes an underground visit 220 metres below the surface, a gold pour and tribal dancing, providing the visitor with an in-depth look at the gold mining industry in South Africa

    JOHANNESBURG AND SOWETO ORIENTATION TOUR

Our tour is designed to give first-time visitors to Johannesburg an overall impression of “Egoli” – the City of Gold, South Africa’s commercial and financial capital. We first take a look around the northern suburbs, then continue to the hustle and bustle of Hillbrow and Braamfontein, home to the Constitutional Court of South Africa. We drive through the downtown area to the Carlton Centre, to view a “mini-Manhattan” from the viewing deck on the 50th floor.

Onward to Soweto (SOuth WEstern TOwnship), largest black residential area in South Africa, where we see a fascinating contrast to Rosebank and Sandton in the north. This sprawling “city within a city” is home to approximately 2-million people, many of whom work in various parts of the greater metropolitan area of the Witwatersrand. In many ways, the story of Soweto is the story of South Africa. Our tour includes all the major points of interest, such as Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Baragwanath taxi rank, Freedom Square, Hector Pieterson Memorial and Nelson Mandela’s former home.

    APARTHEID MUSEUM AND CONSTITUTIONAL HILL

This tour provides the visitor with an opportunity to take an in-depth look at South Africa’s turbulent past. First, travel across Johannesburg to the south of the city to visit the Apartheid Museum (closed on Mondays), that opened its doors in 2002. Here visitors embark on a historical voyage of discovery, a personal exploration of the past that examines the story of apartheid right up to the first democratic elections held in 1994. The tour of the museum lasts approximately two hours.

We then continue to the Constitution Hill precinct, bordered by the inner-city neighbourhoods of Braamfontein and Hillbrow. It is here that South Africa’s new Constitutional Court opened in March 2004. The new court building is, most appropriately, established on the site of the Johannesburg Fort, built as a fortress in 1898 and later converted to one of the country’s most notorious prisons – popularly known as “Number Four”. The Fort closed its doors in 1983. Your visit here includes the museum that has been established in the old prison and will bring home the significance of this development and what it means for the future of Johannesburg and South Africa as a whole.

LESEDI CULTURAL VILLAGE – LUNCH OR DINNER

Experience our cultural diversity. Visit four villages – Zulu, Sotho, Xhosa and Pedi, watch traditional dancing and have a traditional lunch or dinner. This interesting visit takes about 3 hours.

    CRADLE OF HUMANKIND

This fascinating trip is a half day orientation tour, which includes visits to both the Sterkfontein Caves and the Wonder Cave at Kromdraai. The Sterkfontein Caves were discovered in 1896 by an Italian gold prospector and are now regarded as one of the world’s most important archeological sites. The caves are in the Sterkfontein valley which, together with the nearby sites of Swartkrans, Drimolen and Kromdraai, make up the recently proclaimed World Heritage Site known as the “Cradle of Humankind”.

Dr Robert Broom of the Transvaal Museum (now the Museum of Natural History) began excavations at the cave in 1936 and in 1947 discovered a well-preserved complete skull of a species of early man known as Plesianthropus Transvaalensis. This later became known as the famous “Mrs Ples”.

PLEASE NOTE: These tours involve climbing up and down stairs, walking on smooth surfaces which may be slippery at times, and crawling through small spaces. Comfortable casual clothing and walking shoes are strongly recommended.

THE RHINO AND LION NATURE RESERVE

The Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve is a privately owned, unsubsidised game reserve situated on the northwestern outskirts of the Johannesburg metropolitan area. Opened in 1990, the reserve covers some 1 400 hectares, which includes the Lion and Predator Camp where cheetah, lion and the endangered wild dog may be seen. Visitors may also view rhino, wildebeest, hippo and a variety of antelope, such as gemsbok, eland and springbok.
The reserve falls within the Sterkfontein Valley World Heritage Site, which is world-renowned in archeology as the so-called “cradle of humankind”.

    MAROPENG

The exhibition at Maropeng itself is a journey of discovery from the beginnings of the world, through the history of humankind, right into the future. As you emerge from the exhibition, you discover a spectacular view of the Magaliesburg. When you enter the Tumulus at Maropeng, it looks like a giant burial mound. As you finish browsing through the exhibition and emerge, turn and see it, it’s totally transformed – it is now silver, grey and glass, hi-tech and futuristic. You get this feeling that you’re not at the end of history, but at the start of the future.

At present one can also view fossils of a young hominid male, estimated to have been between 11 and 13 years old, and an older female, believed to have been in her late twenties or early thirties and are believed to be a new species Australopithecus sediba, the recently discovered ancestor of the Homo genus, to which humans, Homo sapiens, belong and are believed to be about 1.95 million years old.

    PREMIER DIAMOND MINE

A visit to the active, producing Premier Diamond Mine where the magnificent Cullinan diamond (3106 carats) was found, in 1905. The tour includes a tour of the surface of the mine and viewing the big hole. It takes about 4 hours.

    HALF DAY PRETORIA

We retrace the steps of Afrikaner history: from the Voortrekker Monument (which commemorates the Great Trek) and President Paul Kruger’s House (president when the South African War broke out in 1899), to Church Square and Melrose House where the peace treaty was signed in 1902.
Our last stop is the Union Buildings which houses the president’s office. Set aside roughly 4 hours.
